One morning Bessie cow and her mama set off to climb a mountain. Her mama wanted to show her the beautiful lake at the top of the mountain
(Ask: What is a mountain?)

Snaky

Bessie Cow said ‘Alright, let’s go!’ They packed a bag with lots of snacks – crunchy chips (crrrunch, crrrunch), yummy biscuits, sweet raisins and lots of water.

As they climbed the mountain they met a small squirrel. He was running around and looking very sad. ‘What happened? Why are you sad?’ asked Bessie cow’s mama. ‘I am lost’, said the squirrel. ‘I was with my mama on the way to the top of the mountain, when I strayed away from the path to look at a funny brown leaf. When I came back to the path my mama was gone, and I could not find her’.

Bessie cow’s mama asked him to join them, as she was sure his mama would be at the top of the mountain. The squirrel said ‘alright’, and hopped onto Bessie cow’s back. They continued up the mountain.

Further up they met a snake. His name was Snaky. He was very green. Bessie cow’s mama asked him where he was going. He said, ‘I am going to the top of the mountain to swim in the lake’. Bessie cow’s mama asked him to join them. Snaky said ‘Yes, I will join you’, and he slithered along next to them.

They reached the top of the mountain at last (huff puff, huff puff). There in front of them, was a beautiful blue lake. They were lots of beautiful trees and birds. The birds were all saying, ‘cheep, cheep’ – hello, hello.

There were many beautiful flowers around – red, blue and yellow. There were also many fruit hanging from the trees – apples, oranges, cherries and mangoes.

The squirrel found his mama and they were both very happy. He said, ‘I am sorry Mama, I strayed away from the path and lost you. I won’t do that again’.

Then the animals all took a swim in the lake. They splashed each other in the cool water (splish, splash, splosh), and had a lot of fun! When they finished, they sat down and ate up all their yummy snacks and all the fruit they had plucked from the trees (gobble, gobble, gup, gup).

At the end of the day, Bessie cow and her mama said good-bye to all their new friends and went back home.
